Philadelphia 76ers Sign Allen Iverson
After announcing his retirement only a week ago, Allen Iverson has already found a new home: right back where his NBA career started and hit its apex in Philadelphia.
Iverson signed a non-guaranteed contract for a prorated portion of the veteran's minimum, so there is very little risk involved for a Philadelphia team that is off to a slow start, is struggling to sell tickets and just lost starting point guard Lou Williams for two months with a broken jaw. Iverson will move into Williams' starting spot.
If the move doesn't work out, Philly can simply cut Iverson and owe him no money. Or at least that's the logic behind the non-guaranteed deal.
It may be a bit harder than that, since Iverson is revered in Philadelphia, had his best career moments, including a NBA Finals appearance and a MVP award, while he was a Sixer. It's also where he built his reputation as one of the toughest players in the league and where he constantly dealt with a team that was mismanaged and couldn't surround him with talent. Simply cutting ties with him may prove more difficult.
There's no word on when his first game will be, but it's possible he could debut Dec. 9 against Detroit, who he had a not-so-great experience playing for last season.
