Mark Cuban is Cool With Steroids

Mark CubanMark Cuban is perhaps the most entertaining owner in sports, simply because he purposely says things that will rile people up.

Steroids are the bane of old-school-sports-writers' existences — will someone think of the children? — everywhere, although most who have written about the scourge of steroids know little or nothing about the science that is involved in creating them and that their intended purpose — basically to preserve youth — is something people have been trying for centuries.

Cuban recently responded to alarmists, saying the following:

"We do performance-enhancing things all the time, just not steroids," Cuban said. "If you administer them properly and fairly and set the rules strictly, as long as in doing so we recognize there are no negative long-term health-impact issues. Sometimes, you just put blinders on because it came from underground. Rather than saying, 'what's the best way to do this and is there a positive out of it?' we just dismiss it."

He's right ... sports have always been about getting an edge. There will always be a market for steroids because there will always be people willing to take them. There will always be improved, less detectable steroids because as long as people are willing to pay for them, people will be willing to make them.

So do we ignore the issue, just call it immoral and move on? Or do we make an effort to fully understand all of the risks and benefits, regulated usage and try and make steroid use as safe as possible?
