Lance Armstrong's career has been well documented — from his Tour de France win's, to his comeback from cancer and the rumors of performance enhancing drug use.

One of the things he's most known for is his dedication to finding a cure for cancer (yellow bracelets).

With the close of his career looming, Armstrong and his team attempted to highlight a key motivation that prompted him to return to the sport. However, Tour de France officials denied him and the team of that request.

Armstrong and Team RadioShack wore all-black jerseys Sunday with the number 28, representing the 28 million people living with cancer worldwide. The team was trying to run the final leg of the Tour de France's, which is mostly a celebratory 63.6-mile stage from Longjumeau to Paris.

However, before they team could peddle along the course, race organizers held up the start of the stage for about 15 minutes until RadioShack and Armstrong changed back into their official red-and-black jerseys. The International Cycling Union said the RadioShack riders had to wear the official race numbers.

"Today, we're riding for every one of the 28 million people all over the world whose lives and families are affected by this disease," Armstrong said before Sunday's stage, according to CNN.com.

Armstrong, 38, was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer in 1996 before beating it, winning the Tour from 1999 to 2005. He came out of retirement in 2009 and said he wanted to showcase his Livestrong Foundation to further raise money for the fight against cancer.
