Five Ways to Improve Your Golf Trip
I look forward to my annual golf trip every year. It's the same group of guys every year, sharing the same stories, competing for a $20 mug they get their name on.... but everyone loves it.
I try new things every year to keep it fresh and keep everyone guessing. Here are some things I have done to make it more fun for everyone:

- Have Something to Play For: It doesn't have to be anything big but have something the winner gets. We have a $20 silver mug that gets engraved with the winners name and a jacket. Have everyone chip in or maybe someone has one to donate. It adds to the excitement of the event and offers additional bragging rights.
- Change the Location: It's always fun to add new courses to your resume and a golf trip is a great way to do this quickly. In the five years we have been taking our trip we have played 15 different courses. By doing this you'll get familiar with the architects and start to realize which designs you like the most.
- Keep It Competitive: Everyone who plays should have a chance to win regardless of their skill level. In 2005 (our first trip) we didn't have any handicap system. Big mistake. I shot 82 (my best round ever at the time) the first day and won our four day tournament by 25 strokes in the end. Since then we used handicaps and last year switched to the Stableford Scoring System which eliminates "blowup" holes. There are other options such as making each round a tournament of its own. This provides the opportunity for more winners throughout the event.
- Rent a House: It took our group a couple of years to figure this out and it's something we will never change. Having a house to accommodate everyone makes life a lot easier and cheaper. Everyone will be able to hang out together whether it's to play cards, watch tv, or relax outside. It also cuts down on the cost of food since you can cook or order in. Take advantage of the kitchen and the space, you're usually here for 3-5 days.
- A Welcome Gift or Pack: Every year I have a "welcome pack" (I'm not sure what else to call it) that has a few things in it. I'll put a sleeve of balls, some tees, a picture or two from last year, a golf shirt (which everyone pays for) and whatever else you think of. In the past I've put everything from a bottle of someones favorite drink to a guide about the courses we were going to play. It can get expensive so have everyone chip in a few bucks, it goes a long way.
