Bob Knight will not be Attending his Hall of Fame Induction at Indiana University
Former Indiana head coach and college basketball legend Bob Knight has politely declined his invitation to his induction in the Indiana University Hall of Fame:
Glass said Knight said he was concerned the media interest in his attendance would take away from others being inducted. Along with Knight, Steve Downing, Katrin Koch, Joe Norman, Mike Rabold, Alan Somers and Jerry Yeagley are also entering the Hall of Fame.
Wow, what a gentleman. Except the real reason could be that he's still upset with the university. He's had an outstanding legal claim against Indiana for several years, and in order to try and convince him to show up, a check for $75,000 from an anonymous alumnus arrived to Knight's attorney:
"The Indiana University administration recently made a public announcement on a very private issue that I was being sent a check for $75,000 from alumni donations to cover expenses I incurred as an employee at Indiana University," Knight said in a statement. "Indiana University has refused for nine years to take care of their obligation in this matter. I did not know until [Monday] that this check was sent to my attorney. Upon finding out about it, I immediately gave him instructions to send the check back.
"In all the years I coached at Indiana and elsewhere, I never accepted a thing from alumni and I don't intend to start now," Knight said in the statement. "This issue is with the university, not with the alumni."
Knight's definitely an IU icon, but seriously ... it's not like his controversial ousting from the school was that long ago. Can't really expect Knight to forgive and forget while laughing it up with the good ole boys over a catered chicken dinner. I wonder what Neil Reid is up to these days?
