Blog Focus: Star Pitchers Cliff Lee, Roy Hallady and John Lackey Change Teams
In the busiest day of the Major League Baseball offseason to date, three All-Star pitchers changed teams last night.
Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay were part of a three-team trade between the Phillies, Blue Jays and Mariners, while the Red Sox signed former Angels ace John Lackey.
Writers around the MLB blogosphere had diverse reactions to the deals:
700 Level: "Mind. Blown. Clifton Phifer Lee will most certainly be missed. What a second half he put in for the Phillies. Legendary"
USS Mariner: "This is, quite frankly, a heist. The Mariners are getting a Cy Young caliber pitcher for some decent-but-not-great prospects. They aren’t giving up Morrow. They aren’t giving up Saunders. They aren’t even giving up Triunfel. And yet, they walk away with one of the five or six best pitchers in baseball."
Blue Jays Banter: "If we get these 3, the Phillies number 2,3 and 4 prospects I'd be thrilled and I'd nominate Alex Anthopoulos GM of the year, even if the year hasn't started yet. It would be pretty amazing to get 3 prospects like this without having any leverage at all."
Red Sox Monster: "In signing Lackey, 31, the Red Sox broke an apparent rule that they have held throughout the Theo Epstein regime, signing a 30-plus pitcher to an expensive, longterm contract (five years, $85 million)."
