Blog Focus: Notre Dame Fires Charlie Weis
In the worst kept secret of the last few weeks, Charlie Weis was fired as Notre Dame coach today, ending a four-year run that has been filled with disappointments.
Weis was an extremely polarizing figure throughout his tenure because of his lengthy contract extension that was was awarded before he'd won anything significant, his alleged abrasive personality and his alleged failure to be embraced by the South Bend community. Virtually every blogger has had an opinion on the dismissal.
Black Sports Online: "Notre Dame pulled a Jerry Jones (see Roy Williams) deal when they gave Weis a ten year extension after only ten games in his tenure. Weis smartly sold Notre Dame on the idea he might go to the pros and they panic, so now Charlie will be “eating” off Notre Dame for years to come. The facts are Notre Dame treated Weis a “God” and treated Ty Willingham as a second class citizen. For a school that is supposed to be deep in religious beliefs that was wrong."
Can't Stop the Bleeding: "While OU’s Bob Stoops has already denied interest in the N.D. vacancy, perhaps Jack Swarbick will consider UCF’s George O’Leary? If the Knights are invited to a bowl this December, that will be the 3rd post-season contest for UCF in 5 seasons, which is two more times than O’Leary has had a player die under suspicious circumstances. Admittedly, the biggest blemish on O’Leary’s resume is his resume, but if the Mets can forgive Wally Backman, why can’t this football lifer get another shot at the big time?"
Dr. Saturday: "Weis is survived by an exceptionally talented team — at least on offense, his specialty, which consistently came through with big numbers in to-the-wire shootouts despite the relatively miserable record — though it seems increasingly likely that quarterback Jimmy Clausen is bound for the NFL; the Daily News says Clausen was spotted "giving his football helmet to his family," which the paper takes as yet another sign the junior star is gone alongside his coach."
