Blog Focus: Can Alabama's Mark Ingram win the Heisman Trophy?
Blog Focus is Technorati's daily roundup of the top stories as told by the bloggers of the world. Each day five posts, no matter how popular or nascent, will be selected by editors to portray a general unscientific reaction to discussion points around the 'Net.
Three straight college football quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy and seven of the last 10 winners have been quarterbacks, but Alabama's Mark Ingram is making a push to end that streak.
The Crimson Tide sophomore is averaging 6.7 yards per carry, including a 246-yard effort against South Carolina Oct. 17.
As the most explosive player on arguably the best team in the country, Ingram's Heisman candidacy is gaining steam. Here's what some bloggers have to say about it:
Holly Anderson, Dr. Saturday: "The pundits were already high on Alabama's stumpy sophomore after big games against Virginia Tech, Kentucky and Ole Miss, but his bruising, exhausting, 246-yard masterpiece against game but overmatched South Carolina earned A-pluses across the board despite the Tide's ugliest win yet. And they had to love his "Just the self-effacing clichés please" post-game interview with Erin Andrews, too. Heisman stickers all around!"
Chris Low, ESPN Heisman Watch: "It's hard to find a more complete running back in college football than Ingram. The sophomore can run it and catch it and is an excellent blocker. He has 312 yards rushing in his past two games and already has scored 10 touchdowns through the Tide's first six games."
Heisman Pundit: "My first instinct on this is to say ‘no way.’ However, upon further review, there does appear to be an opening available to the Alabama running back. Voters are clearly underwhelmed by McCoy and Tebow and they aren’t completely sold on Clausen, either. So now you have Ingram coming off a 246-yard game and the buzz on him is just starting to build. On the season he has 905 rushing yards and it is likely that he has six games left before the Heisman vote."
