Yale Delays Gmail Changeover
Mashable (via the Yale Daily News) reports that Yale University has delayed switching their campus email provider from Horde to the Google Apps for Education package, which includes Gmail and other Google Apps, like Calendar and Docs.
Deputy Provost for Science and Technology Steven Girvin cited "concerns expressed by faculty" as the reason for the postponement. Ultimately, questions about security weighed on the IT staff as they made the decision to hold off on the switch.
Many colleges are ditching email providers altogether, as the cost of providing university email to each student is a major expense. Pretty much everyone coming into college now already has an email address, so paying to assign them to incoming classes seems like an exercise in redundancy.
As more and more services rely on the cloud infrastructure, these questions will become more and more common as businesses enter the wider world of networked data.
