In the world of Blogs, the most important indicator that you have made it big is your Google Page Rank. Hand crafted by Google Founder Larry Page during his early Stanford days, this is a complex algorithm that defines the worth of your blog.

No, it is not based on your follower count. Nor does it depend on the hundreds of cross-links your SEO adviser generates for you. For surely, Larry Page knew all the tricks that SEO guys would be up to even as a youngster, to devise a system that kept away the chaff.

The US patent for Page Rank is in the name of Stanford University and Google has been given exclusive rights of use in lieu of 1.8 million shares pledged by Page to his Alma mater.

Though Google does not say how they arrive at the Page Rank, it is generally believed to be a weighted average of blog duration, the content worthiness, its linking, and its readership, and is the last word in both the web world as well as the blogosphere.

There is no direct formula connecting Page Rank with the number of links, and link farms are especially sorted out to discourage rampant commercial linkages.

Page Rank gives the importance of the page as per Google considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. If your writing appears on a website of higher Page Rank, it normally fetches a higher position in Google search.

Normally if your blog is a year old and your content and readership is worthwhile, your Page Rank should be from 3 to 5. For a five-year-old blog with very good content and readership the Page Rank varies between 6 to 8, while the top 100 websites score 9 and above. In short, having a higher Page Rank blog gives you a better snob value in the blogosphere.
