Want to Know Why Apple Changed the iTunes Logo? Because CDs Are Dead.
A subject of much controversy since Apple's Wednesday afternoon press conference, the brand new iTunes logo appears to have the blogosphere up in a tizzy. Well, it's time they get over it because Apple is forging ahead, with or without the design snobs. (And on a side note--who the hell thinks they really know design better than Apple does?)
Many ask, well why change the logo at all? Doesn't this fit under "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?
No, no it doesn't. Because the old iTunes icon was very much broken, in a remarkably obvious and, honestly, painfully stupid way. Take a close look. What is that you see behind the music notes?
That's right. It's a CD. Ya know, those things that people used to use, before 2005 rolled around and people started downloading music from the Internet like civilized human beings. Newsflash: CDs are dead.
When's the last time you bought a CD? That's what I thought.
Now look at Apple--when's the last time they produced an album on a CD? Oh right... never. So why would they want to promote CD sales on their very own icon? Why would they want the icon of their flagship piece of entertainment software to promote the only alternative music format from the one that they offer?
I can't think of a reason. And I just about guarantee you can't either. That's why they changed it. That's why they're finally moving forward. And that's why you need to suck it up and quit complaining about the icon. Just ask @itunes10icon.
