Late this evening Twitter announced the release of their official iPad app, poised to compete with other iPad Twitter apps such as Tweetdeck and possibly even the much-hyped Flipboard.

Development on the app seems to have been led by Loren Brichter, formerly of Atebits and now one of the lead app developers for Twitter.

The Twitter blog entry touts several new features of the app, including panes to view content within tweets, embedded media, gestures, and no need to login to view categorized streams.

The style of the app appears to be very much along the lines of the official Twitter for iPhone app, formerly named Tweetie, based on the screenshots posted on the Twitter blog. But don't take my word for it, the app is available for free now on the iTunes app store.
