For fun I Googled the term SEO. The magic machine returned 126 million results. That means at this very moment there are no less than 126 million websites trying to explain this elusive term. The majority of them are either trying to sell SEO services or explain SEO.

I thought about this for a second and then a thought popped into mind. Fourteen results show on the first page. There are 126 million results in total. The most ambitious web searchers among us will travel to page three looking for information. Let's assume that there are 14 results per page. Under that assumption, about 52 pages would be contenders to catch a searcher's eye. Those aren't great odds (especially for a professional).

The SEO champions would have you believe that a sound keyword structure will propel your website into the stratosphere. Websites grow and spread because they provide information that people need, want or like to share. A myriad of websites with minimal keyword optimization have proved this (Facebook, Twitter, Digg, YouTube, CNN, etc).

As we speak there are thousands (maybe millions) of people competing with you on keywords. That's not a smart battle to fight. Strive for interesting content, brainstorm ways to connect with potential readers and set a plan of action to connect. If you're managing a small blog, this is a much better path to success.

Don't make the mistake of letting keywords be the crux of your marketing strategy. Instead, focus on creating great content and unorthodox methods of spreading your word.
