Facebook has emerged as the top source for malware infections among small and midsize businesses in the United States, according to findings of a new survey.

Thirty-three percent of the small and midsize businesses in the Panda Security survey indicated they had experienced malware (malicious software) or virus infections from social networks.

Facebook was cited as the top culprit for companies that sustained malware infections (71.6 percent) and privacy violations (73.2 percent). YouTube took the second spot for malware infections (41.2 percent), while Twitter ranked second for privacy violations (51 percent).

For companies suffering financial losses from employee privacy violations, Facebook again was cited as the most common source (62 percent), followed by Twitter (38 percent), YouTube (24 percent) and LinkedIn (11 percent).

Thirty-five percent of the small to midsize businesses infected by malware from social networks suffered financial losses, according to the survey. More than one-third of those companies reported losses of at least $5,000.

Sixty-nine percent of survey respondents said they have active Facebook accounts, followed by Twitter (44 percent), YouTube (32 percent) and LinkedIn (23 percent).
