A Pew research study released today as part of the Pew Internet and American Life Project shows that social media usage has grown dramatically over the past year--particularly among older users.

The study reveals that social media use among users age 50-64 has increased a whopping 88% from this time last year, from 25% to 47%. Meanwhile, use among those age 65 and older doubled, from 13% in April 2009 to 26% in May 2010.

While neither statistic reaches the incredible penetration rate of users age 18 to 29 (which increased 13%—from 76% to 86%), these numbers show that older adults are catching up quickly. This report mirrors similar reports earlier this year showing Baby Boomers flocking to social networks in droves.

Anyone still wondering if social media is a fad? I'm thinking statistics like this pretty much clear up that nonsense.

See the summary of the report here, and check out the full report if you really want the nitty gritty details.
