If you’re one of those people who only gets on Twitter whenever the mood strikes, you might discover that the conversation has gone on without you. But will people simply ignore you if you don’t tweet as often as you’d like?

I don’t think they will – AS LONG as you have interesting, relevant or helpful things to share when you DO tweet.  If you’re tweeting about the latest get rich quick scheme or how some “secret money-making method” netted you $10,000 in two hours – yes, most of the Twitterverse will not only ignore you – they’ll block and report you as spam.

If you’re not tweeting “business opportunities” but still find that people aren’t answering your questions or participating in the conversation you started, it may simply be that you don’t have quite enough followers yet.  Ideally you should have around 300-400 folks following you to start seeing a good deal of conversation going on.

Once you begin to get more involved in Twitter, you might find it helpful to have those conversations threaded – similar to how some blogs and forums work, where replies to specific people are indented or colored differently to help keep them separate from the main topic.  There are many good threaded Twitter @replies programs and websites out there – such as:

Bettween: Track the Twitter conversation between two people

TweetBoard: Currently in Alpha release, Tweetboard lets you keep track of a conversation by giving each participant their own unique URL

TweetConvo: Enter the URL of any Tweet to see the conversation behind it.

Starting a conversation on Twitter works just like in real life. Feel free to drift around the party until you find something that catches your attention. Share a link, share a laugh or introduce yourself to someone you’d like to know better.  You’ll find that most folks on Twitter are open to discussion and happy to answer questions or give recommendations if they can.
