Foursquare Hits 3 Million Users and It's Big News
Foursquare hit three million users recently and the world stood still. Yes, I know, I'm being sarcastic.
This really isn't news, but what is news is the fact that the company reached the mark less than two months after the location-based service passed the two million users mark in July.
So what does this really mean?
It means that location-based services are catching on at a rapid pace — or at least Foursquare is.
Who do they thank for that?
My guess, Facebook.
With Places, Facebook brought location-based services to 500 million users — most of which, I'd argue, don't use them. Yes, there are folks like myself that love using location-based services just because of the cool factor (and app discovery), but there are also folks that just don't get it.
Facebook did it in a simple way — with no badges, no mayorships, no nada. They just allow peeps to check in and that's it.
So, with Foursquare blowing up like a hot air balloon, what will come next for the service? Will they get sucked up by Facebook or remain as a stand alone social media player?
I don't have the answer, but what I do know is that if the company wants to add another million peeps to its user base, it has to keep innovating. Otherwise, social media boredom will set in and they'll see a plateau.
