Twitter for Charity work

Twitter has opened up a whole new way to leverage and recruit volunteers and donors for important causes.  Some organizations aren’t content to simply chirp in the Twitterverse – they’re looking to make an impact in a BIG way.  Here’s how they did it, and what you can learn from them.

Twestival – “Twitter Festival” has grown on both a local and global scale – successfully raising over a million dollars for 137 different charities.  Currently, their focus is on “Concern”, a non-profit which works to establish schools, personal hygiene instruction, clean water and healthy food for children of all ages.  Cities around the world participate by tweeting about the event with the #twestival hashtag to help raise awareness and funds.

What You Can Learn from Twestival – A great cause has no borders.  We often take everyday necessities like clean water, food and sanitation for granted.  Social media has a way of bringing the focus back to those in need, and sparking a drive to do something about it.

Crowdrise – An idea that sprang from a marathon run, Crowdrise lets people create charity/fundraising pages for marathon sponsorships, volunteering or a cause they believe in.  For every vote you get from the Crowdrise community, you earn 500 points, plus 10 points per dollar you raise.  You can also invite your friends to sponsor your cause or project – a micro-donation that works the same way as if you sponsored a friend in a marathon.

What You Can Learn from Crowdrise – Great ideas can come from the unlikeliest of places.  Look beyond the way things “used to be done” in your particular industry and put a social twist on them for an even greater response.
