Food Fight: Walmart, Target Battle for Social Media Supremacy Among Grocery Chains
Walmart and Target are duking it out for social media dominance among U.S. grocery retailers.
New data from Pace Communications show the two retailers practically neck-and-neck in terms of Facebook fans. Pace’s count puts Target at 1,605,920, with Walmart at 1,584,683.
In third place on Facebook is Whole Foods Market, with 311,717 fans, according to Pace. Trader Joe’s is No. 4 at 234,587. In fifth place is Costco with 134,023.

Results of the study “reveal a titanic battle between Walmart and Target for the mantle of top supermarket chain with the most social media followers. Each has added over 500,000 followers to Facebook in the last four months,” said John Cass, head of digital marketing at Pace Communications.
The social media race is shaping up differently on Twitter, however. There, Whole Foods rules with 1,793,104 followers, according to Pace.
Far behind in the Twitter pack are Walmart (32,754, No. 2), Target, (30,478, No. 3), Wegmans (8,892, No. 4) and Meijer (6,803, No. 5).
“If there is one broad statement I can make about custom content grocery marketing, it’s that for national companies like Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Walmart, there’s an understanding of the value of creating content on the web and social networks for both their search engine rankings and customer engagement across the web,” Cass said.
