DARPA $40,000 Contest Starts December 5
To help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Internet, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is holding the DARPA Network Challenge. The goal is to find ten red weather balloons fixed at ten different locations in the continental U.S. There is only a single prize that will go to the first person reporting the ten locations correctly. You have to submit the latitude and longitude details of each of the locations of the balloon. In the event of none of the contestants are able to find out the correct ten locations, the person submitting first the highest number of correct locations will be entitled to the prize.
You can participate in this contest from anywhere in the world after filling in the registration form. Once you fill it out, you will be mailed a password to login and participate in the contest. Don't forget to read the rules carefully. Only in a case of being the winner will you have to provide DARPA officials with your name and Social Security number. The registration is open until December 5, and you have to find these 10 balloons before midnight, December 14.
The prize money is a whopping $40,000 and the best part of the game is you can find out the people who will help you in finding the balloons after you register and are provided with a password to login. That means you can form a group of your friends (or make new one) and share the prize money among your group provided you are able to crack the nut before anybody else does. The purpose of the contest is to make the Internet and social networking effective, meaningful and rewarding.
