Becoming an Author and Finding the Time
You've heard it from teachers, parents, spouses, piano teachers, and now me - someone you know nothing about. Well, admittedly, I'm no expert on writing, but I do know that if you want to make a serious attempt at completing the novel that's been holding your thoughts hostage (when you should be focused on completing that TPS Report), you're going to need to set some of your precious time aside.
You're in class all day, you work two jobs, or perhaps you're out every night of the week juggling baseball games with soccer practices. Above that, what little time is left is to be hailed as the Holy Grail of your time to be spent decompressing from the long day's activities. I’ll start writing the book when this semester is over, you tell yourself.
Well, if writing a novel is what you were meant to do, then quit making excuses, follow Nike’s advice, and 'Just Do It'. Make the time, that is.
But how?
Websites such as eHow provide some great suggestions; however, I disagree on their idea to get up an extra hour earlier. If you're like me, you're already fighting to gain more of that wonderful, rejuvenating gift we call sleep. Unless you're one of those fortunate people able to survive on four hours of sleep a night, reducing your rest is only going to tax your creativity. On the flip side, if you're breaking ten hours a night in dreamland, perhaps the tip is worth exploring. The point is, we’re all different, so experiment with these ideas to see what works best for you. If you're really serious about improving your written words, then I suggest writing a minimal of thirty minutes each day.
Simply googling Making Time to Write will provide an abundance of articles on where and how to find that time. And, of course, there are always books on the topic like Time Management from the Inside Out or Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Productivity, both of which have received good reviews. If you're really desperate, you can always resort to time management software programs, but be prepared to set even more time aside to using these.
