4 Helpful and Productive Things You Can Do with Twitter

Did I just mention helpful, productive and Twitter in the same sentence?  Normally, Twitter and “getting things done” go together like peanut butter and egg rolls, but in this case, you really can use the micro-blogging service to increase your productivity and reach some pretty amazing goals.

Here are four ways to do just that:

Lose Weight
Twitter can help you shed pounds, but not by typing the flab away.  TweetWhatYouEat.com is an online food journal that helps you track what you eat by letting you tweet the food and the calories (if you know them), plus any exercise you do, directly into an online journal.  You can post through Twitter directly or your mobile phone, and whatever calorie information you don’t know, CrowdCal, a crowd-sourced calorie database, will try to fill in for you.  If you’re nervous about tweeting that you just had a pastrami and rye sandwich on Twitter to your 2,000+ followers – fear not.  The food diary information is sent as a direct message (DM) to TweetWhatYouEat – so none of your followers can know about your guilty indulgences.

Quit Smoking
Qwitter
lets you keep track of how many cigarettes you smoke each day, while letting you keep an online journal of the ups and downs of the quitting process.  You can see your progress over time and, if you want, share your information with other qwitters as a sort of 140-character support group.  The Qwitter site, run by TobaccoFreeFlorida.com , also includes several helpful tips to make sure you stick to your stop smoking plan.

Find Out How Much Prescriptions Cost
Follow @AskCH and you’ll be able to find out how much different prescriptions cost for your area plus get common medical definitions demystified.  Tweets can include a specially formatted question such as “d askch Cost of [prescription name] near [zip code]” or “d askch What is [prescription name]?”  You can also possibly save money by finding out if there’s a generic version of a medicine available by tweeting “d askch generic for [prescription name]”.  The d before askch means you’re sending a direct message, so no one other than @askch will see your question.

Track Packages
Forget refreshing the UPS or FedEx tracking page to see when your goodies will arrive. UseTrackThis.com is a tracking application that works with both Twitter and Facebook which lets you track a package simply by giving the tracking code and a nickname for it.  You can also only be notified if the package is delivered, delayed or on its way to you, rather than getting constant city to city shipment alerts.
