U.S. Senator Bucks Trend, Makes Sense
Wait. This guy's actually in Congress? Where the hell has he been? Michael Bennet is making far too much sense for a senator from Colorado. Then again, he's only been in office for a little over a year, so he's far from jaded and perhaps too naive to assume he can singlehandedly change the system. Ha! Everybody point and laugh at the dreamer!
Or, hey, maybe he can.
Yesterday Bennet unveiled some legislation that would make some drastic changes to the way Congress is run, including reforms on congressional salaries, lobbyists, pork, filibusters, and campaign finance.
Today he chatted with Washington Post blogger Ezra Klein about the legislation and his vision for a Washington that can stimulate some actual progress. It's a wonderful read and might even crack some optimistic feelings into the adamantium-clad lockbox of cynicism.
Candidates always talk about bipartisanship and making progress, but for once it looks like somebody within the Beltway is actually backing up words with actions in the form of this legislation. The biggest obstacle is his colleagues, who will have to look at themselves in the mirror and determine whether or not they are the problem. Nevertheless, you might want to keep one-and-a-half eyeballs on this bill.
