Survey Says: American Mood Continues to Go South
So here's a happy little thought for Friday the 13th: Americans aren't exactly singing "Put On A Happy Face" these days. It's almost like the country is kind of becoming one gigantic Debbie Downer.
The headline from a Wednesday Wall Street Journal sums it all up: "Grim Voter Mood Turns Grimmer." According to the report, a recent poll taken in conjunction with NBC News shows that two-thirds of Americans think the economy hasn't hit rock bottom yet. I know. I was surprised too, because that whole recovery thing was magically humming along due to the bang up job done by Congress and the Obama administration.
Now before anyone goes and starts calling me a shill for the Republican Party based on that statement, or really several other statements I've made in previous Technorati articles, I will state once again that I am absolutely not a Republican. In fact, I actually share the same hesitation about the GOP that I have about the Democratic Party.
While the Republicans can be relatively confident in the notion that they stand a better than average chance of regaining control of at least one of the legislative chambers on Capitol Hill in about 80 days, they shouldn't fool themselves into thinking it's because voters necessarily like them better. The same WSJ poll also indicates that 24 percent of Americans have positive feelings about the GOP.
I don't necessarily have negative feelings about them, but I'm still leery about what their actual agenda will be versus their stated agenda. It's the kind of skepticism Crocodile Dundee had when he met that cross-dresser.
On the flip side, it's not like Democrats should be giggling uncontrollably to themselves.
While some of their hardcore supporters will say they can stand on the merits of their achievements, such as reforming the health care and financial systems, the survey implies that they shouldn't exactly expect a lot of people to pat them on the back.
The report also said, "Six in 10 Americans rated Congress' performance this year as below average or one of the worst." Any sane person should know this isn't breaking news since Congressional job approval has been in the toilet for a long time, but wait...there's more.
Of those who think the economy is bound to get even worse, two-thirds of them are pulling for a Republican controlled Congress. Oh, joy of joys, that would be grand, wouldn't it?
