Someone Tell Howell Raines About Media Matters
Media Matters for America, which has long been a top 100 blog in Technorati's rankings, is well known for fact-checking and calling out conservative bias on Fox News. In fact, their front page Wordle pretty much confirms this.
It must be an unknown commodity to Howell Raines, whose March 14 column not only let us see two days into the future (what else will happen Sunday — let me call my bookie!), but fervently damnifies the entire Fox News operation and wonders why honest journalists aren't calling out the cable news channel for essentially endorsing one party and one message, a big no-no in journalism.
Apart from MMFA, The Huffington Post has a whole section on Fox News-related stories, many of them far from complimentary. There was the 2004 documentary Outfoxed. Jon Stewart on The Daily Show often rails against the channel as well. There are many other examples.
Maybe Raines' overall point is that filmmakers, bloggers, and comedians are the only ones trying to bring down the News Corporation hydra, and that his veteran trusted journalists are opting not to partake in the cause for fear of being discredited. It's a reasonable concern, but all those people I just listed ... that's a rather substantial cavalry, and one I'd love to have on my side. It's 2010. Walter Cronkite is not walking through that door.
