Some Democrats Look to Bieber to Bail Them Out

The Democratic organization Campus Progress is taking an unorthodox approach to garnering votes for the 2010 midterms. They are doing their best to poach Justin Bieber fans, even though he is neither old enough to vote, nor even American.

You see, in this age of social media, it pays to grab on to the biggest and fastest moving meme or idea on the net. Right now, that happens to be Bieber. Take Twitter for instance, where Bieber has over 5 million followers and his fan base is using up 3% of Twitter's servers at any given time. It's rumored that there are servers dedicated just to Bieber chatter at Twitter. I find this interesting, as what could a 14-year-old pop star say in 140 characters or less that would be even mildly interesting or intelligent?

Focusing on the viral part of Bieber's popularity on social media platforms, the group decided to hold a video contest in the hopes that one of their videos would go viral and spread the Democratic message - like a virus. No hidden allegories there. What they got was this video advertisement, that stresses voting on behalf of Bieber, and they like it.

The video reads like a how-to when it comes to name-dropping celebrities who have not endorsed your product. Campus Progress is lucky Bieber is not American and doesn't vote, otherwise he might give a shit that he is being used for endorsement purposes.

"This isn't your standard election year video of celebrities asking you to vote," says the video. "It's us, asking you to vote for celebrities who can't, celebrities like Justin Bieber. Bieber's too young to vote, yet whomever we elect in the 2010 midterm elections will impact his future and ours. ... So tell your parents, your grandparents, your Facebook friends ... If they won't do it for you, ask them to do it for Bieber."
