The Turkish immigrant defended himself with a flagpole on the night US citizens were voting for leadership.

Becoming a citizen of the U.S. has its draw backs. As the country was selecting the best candidates to represent all of us, a retired NYPD cop and his sons attacked a gas station manager on Long Island who had recently become a US citizen.

"Aliens, Get out of my country," shouted one of the sons, teenager Richard Vitale, Jr., as he attacked the manager with a flagpole.

The skirmish at the OK Gas Station in Levittown began after attending clerk Yuksel Cebeci, 37, refused to sell a cigar to Vitale Jr., who at 17, is too young to buy tobacco products according to New York state law.

The teen left the station but came back 20 minutes later with his father, Richard Vitale Sr., his brother Gregory Vitale, and friends Christopher Makhmaltchi and Nicholas Lazarus. By the time the five returned to the station, the manager, Yavuz Erdogan, 38, a Turkish immigrant, was talking to the police about the original altercation. Despite police presence, the five men attacked the station manager.

Son Richard Vitale, Jr. clubbed manager Erdogan with a flagpole, then tossed the pole at Edrogan, and fled.  Erdogan picked up the pole to defend himself against the still attacking ex-cop Vitale, Sr. The Nassau Police finally intervened, charging Vitale, his sons and two other adults, with assault. Vitale and son Richard also face weapons charges for use of the flagpole.

Racist groups have criticized the Turkish immigrant for using the flagpole, with the US flag fully attached, to defend himself. At the same time, leaders of the new Republican Majority in Congress have announced a refusal to work with President Obama unless he adopts their core beliefs. The people of the United States are at a critical moment in history in which they can pull together to solve tough economic and social problems, or fight in the streets using everything at their disposal including flagpoles.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) and the Dream Act will strengthen the border while unifying families and cementing a work force that is desperately needed, especially in rural areas. In order for the US to continue as a leader of world peace, its citizens must first find peace within their own land.
