Michael Steele Should Resign

Michael Steele, the head of the R.N.C., is once again embroiled in controversy. As I'm sure you are aware, just days before July 4th Mr. Steele stated, "This is a war of Obama's choosing. This is not — this is not something the United States had actively constituted or wanted to engage in." As I'm also sure that you are aware, the United States invaded Afghanistan after a terrorist group, al Qaeda, supported by their government, the Taliban, flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. This was in 2001, eight years before President Obama took his oath of office.
This ignorant statement is the culmination of blunder after blunder from Mr. Steele. However, I do not believe his words alone are sufficient to warrant his resignation. Rather, the consequences that they bring and the damage they cause to the Republican party are why Mr. Steele should resign.
Consider for a moment the simple truth that we are talking about this statement, instead of detailing the excellent Republican chances this coming November. By shifting the focus away from the reeling Democrats, Mr. Steele has created an unnecessary diversion, while making the G.O.P. look bad at the same time. Unfortunately, it seems that he has a propensity to create gaffes at a high rate.
With the July 4th holiday weekend still in swing, it would be prudent for Mr. Steele, both for himself and the good of his party, to step down quietly. If he were to do so now, it would preclude future gaffes and end the controversy before critical mass.
