Homicide Spike in Washington, DC Suburbs
Prince George's County in Maryland has seen a recent spike in homicide rates. So far, there have been 13 murders in P.G. County since the new year.
In a press release, Council Chair Turner of Prince George's County stated that she had been in contact with Interim Police Chief Mark Magaw. Magaw has promised that he will assign an additional 100 law enforcement officers to work throughout the county. According to Chief Magaw, the homicides are connected, and they are related to drug activity.
The Examiner reports that federal agents are being brought on board to assist with the investigation. Major Andy Ellis admits that it is quite abnormal to bring in agents, stating, "I can't remember us doing that since probably the mid-to-late '90s." The Feds will consist of the FBI, DEA, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Interesting fact, as of Thursday, January 13: The Examiner reports that the homicide rate in P.G. County surmounted the 12 U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan this year.
