Good Morning America Might Get A Little Greek
Some news from Howie Kurtz is putting This Week host, former Clinton advisor and part-time Jason Bateman lookalike George Stephanopoulos as a frontrunner to co-host Good Morning America. The outgoing Diane Sawyer is in the ABC News turnstile to replace Charles Gibson on ABC World News later this month.
Would he be a natural fit on GMA? It's a logical progression for anyone to go from Sunday mornings to weekday mornings. Everyone's goal in life, I'd imagine, is for people to be able to sleep in on Sundays, or if nothing else, to at least roam around the house in slippers.
But departing from a political focus to a more general budget — look, they got Chris Brown to apologize to Rihanna! — is a pretty solid way to be taken less seriously. This isn't to trash morning shows. They have their function in society and sometimes you get that insane Tom Cruise/Matt Lauer moment. But these shows are not a place for debate; they exist to give the audience something light and digestible before lunch. Which makes me wonder how many granola bars Stephanopoulos could buy with his new deal should he accept the job.
Politico's Michael Calderone has similar concerns. He's an established beltway moderator. Could he do GMA and This Week? Not unless you can find a good robotic clone to perform some multitasking. Or if Jason Bateman can pull it off.
