Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley announced today that he will not seek reelection in 2011. The announcement means the end of his 20-plus year streak, soon to be longest any person has ever served as mayor of the city.

The opening provides a unique opportunity for White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who expressed an interest in the position in April of 2009. Rumors about his running for the office swirled again at the beginning of this year but were quickly dismissed. Now, however, administration officials appear to be confident he will run.

Should the notoriously foul-mouthed Chief of Staff leave the White House, it could mean a significant shake up in White House staff only a year before the 2012 election, with unknown consequences.
