Congressional Democrats Attempting to Avert Disaster - Page 2

That is indeed an interesting statement, Madam Speaker. Let’s see: there’s a health care bill that at last count close to 60 percent of Americans favor repealing, a $787 billion “stimulus” package of which half has not been used and has also not accomplished diddly crap to get the country out of its economic mess, and additional spending bills recently passed that could have been paid for using unused stimulus funds.

And this woman is worried about regrets the day after the elections instead of right now? Am I the only one who finds this a little screwed up?

While incumbent Democrats who campaigned in 2008 on platforms that included health care reform, financial reform, or increased assistance for the unemployed, many are hoping to gain ground before this November by vigorously attacking their GOP opponents from a variety of points of view, in an effort to protect themselves from the overall dismay with Congress.

In their Times/MSNBC article, Jeff Zeleny and Carl Hulse indicated that in the various Congressional races, “It is an open question whether voters will find the back-and-forth exchanges persuasive or whether some have reached the point where they are no longer listening to Democratic messages.” It could very well be that we have already hit that point much in the same way the Republicans did in 2006 and the Democrats did before in 1994, and if those two election years are any indicator of what we’ll see in a couple of months, then things are going to get brutal, kind of like a pro wrestling match where the ropes are replaced by barbed wire.

So when we get back to that Titanic comparison, I guess what we have is the President as J. Bruce Ismay, who has been portrayed in film as insisting on the Titanic setting a speed record on its way to New York, and Nancy Pelosi as Rose who is not quite as easy on the eyes. This version of Rose may be declaring that she’ll “never let go,” but I have a funny feeling voters across America are going to have something to say about that.

And for the record, I managed to disturb myself with that Rose/Nancy Pelosi comparison. I feel dirty.

Welcome to Mr. Hewitt's depository of brain drippings. On an average day, I may channel one or any combination of Lewis Black, Denis Leary, Dennis Miller, and some of the goofier aspects of Glenn Beck. I don't intend for my opinions to offend, but I can't say I'll apologize for them. …
