Confucius Say: Hurrah, I'm Honored!
Glory be Texas U.S. Representative Al Green. Without him, our fabled House of Representatives might have failed to honor the 2,560th birthday of Confucius. I completely spaced on that!
Yesterday the resolution was passed in a committee (!) due in part to its 41 co-sponsors (!!) "[h]onoring the 2,560th anniversary of the birth of Confucius and recognizing his invaluable contributions to philosophy and social and political thought." So what if I don't honor Confucius? Do I receive a fine? Or perhaps a stoning?
It's generally accepted that Confucius was born on September 28, 551 BC. And very few people know exactly what he did, other than inspire many poignant sayings, with many of them being attributed incorrectly. And I suppose it's nice that they're keeping his teachings in mind while they're serving their constituents, but I forget the idiom about wasting one's time while taxpayers sorta need help.
That's what House Minority Leader John Boehner said, albeit in a naughty partisan swipe: "While Democrats get ready to celebrate the birth of an ancient Chinese philosopher, House Republicans will talk about our better solutions to create jobs and make health care more affordable and accessible for America's seniors."
Okay then. The next unnecessary bill I'll spotlight will be introduced by you guys.
