Breaking: Political Parties Want It Both Ways
Today's histrionics emanating out of the Republican Party's orifices stem from House speaker Nancy Pelosi supporting a potential plan to approve the Senate-backed health care bill without specifically voting on it, but on a similar bill, known as "self-execution."
As Talking Points Memo displays, Republicans have always had a history of being against self-execution ... except when they're in control, in which case they'll use it. Sort of like a coach wanting fouls to be called on the other team while hoping they're ignored when his own players do it.
This is not unlike a party's opinion of the filibuster when they can use it. For example, Harry Reid looked into trying to reduce its potency while five years ago calling it an "important tool of moderation and consensus."
It's human nature to want things both ways. Yes, I called politicians "human." I'm kind of surprised myself. But at least the shock of hating a dose of one's own medicine isn't enough to rattle your coffee cup.
