Are Congressional Democrats Turning Into the New Republicans?
I am, of course, being a little facetious when I ask such a question in a headline, but considering how things have been developing this campaign season, maybe it could become a legitimate question in due time. Lord knows my friends can tell you I’ve thrown out some dumb inquiries in the past.
The reason that I pose this question is due to two items that you may have heard about recently: the idea that many Democrats have been running away from ObamaCare like the plague in practically every congressional race in the country and recent reports that several congressional Democrats are urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to keep tax cuts for all.
I find health care as a campaign issue particularly interesting. Think back to this past March when ObamaCare was signed into law. Whether you agree with its passage or not, you can’t deny that it was a ginormous victory for supporters of some form of “universal” health care, and it was especially sweet for supporters who didn’t forget about the sting that was felt when Hillary Clinton’s version of it failed in 1993. The problem for Democrats in Congress is that the thrill of victory turned to the agony of defeat at the same time.
It’s no secret that opposition to ObamaCare has been relatively steady since it was passed, with as many as 63 percent in favor of its repeal at one point according to Rasmussen Reports, and it seems like Democrats have been paying attention.
In a Thursday Politico article, Sarah Kliff reported that “Democratic candidates are spending three times more advertising against the health reform law than they are in support of it.”
Wait...what? And in breaking news here on Technorati, pigs have started flying; bears have stopped crapping in the woods, and M. Night Shyamalan’s newest movie might not suck.
