Recently, I saw an amazing news story on TV. It was about the hardships faced by women working in the Middle East. A woman who worked in Saudi Arabia for 5 months and, after coming back to Sri Lanka, she was hospitalized because of wounds she received during her 5 month stay in Saudi Arabia.

And here comes the surprising part: after hospitalization, doctors examined x-rays and found out that there were 23 nails inside her body. In media interviews, she has said that the house owner where she worked used to put hot nails through her body when she made a mistake or when she forgot to do her work. Just imagine: How would you feel if someone put a hot nail through your body?

She is not the only woman who suffered terrible hardships like that. Each year, hundreds of women workers come to Sri Lanka because they can’t work in Middle Eastern countries. It’s a shame how these countries treat women, especially foreign women working as housekeepers. They really need to change their attitudes toward women. There were situations where women who died in the Middle East had some of their internal organs removed.

However, the ironic thing is that airport officials didn't detect any metal inside her body when she went through the metal detector.
