1 in 6 Getting Government Hand Outs
It's being reported that one out of every six people is getting some sort of Government assistance. That's one out of every six people that is probably some sort of hypocrite at some point, most likely bashing the system that enables their general survival. That seems like a high percentage, but when you break it down it makes sense. There are several forms of Government assistance.
Welfare: 4.4 million people receive welfare. To me, it seems like most of them reside in Central Florida, but that just might be my own perception. Welfare went up 18% during the recession, but that was actually a slowdown. Welfare is one of the programs that is being questioned by current leadership as to its effectiveness. It's effective, in the sense that it effectively causes lazy people not to want to work. Yes, the job market sucks, but as long as they can make more on welfare than at McDonald's, it isn't gonna change.
Food Stamps: 40 million people get food stamps. A number that is 50% higher than before the recession. More people became eligible because of the job loss, and so on. The food stamp program is currently facing a severe cut due to the financial needs of the nutrition program that the First Lady is looking to initialize. Really, it would make sense if the Government just gave everyone a chicken, a cow and a small plot of land. You know, like in the old country.
Unemployment: 10 million people get unemployment benefits. Four times the amount in 2007. What makes it worse is the increased caseloads that have been put on the state unemployment offices, which just can't handle them. That might be why unemployment benefits have been extended several times for most, coming in at a whopping 99 weeks. That's just crazy. How about instead of sending out unemployment checks to a handful of qualified people, the government hires them to work in the understaffed social services offices? Nah, that makes too much sense; keep handing out money.
