Mauritius in a Nutshell

Last year my family and I went to Mauritius for two weeks and I have to say it was one of the best holidays we have ever had. We stayed at Le Paradis Hotel on the the Morne Peninsula.

We stayed in a private villa right on the beach and absolutely everything was immaculate, from the beach to the villa. All the staff wore pristine uniforms and were always more than helpful. I guess you could say it was a perfect paradise getaway: swaying palm trees, clear blue seas and excellent food. Speaking of food, if you ever find yourself in Mauritius you must try the locally caught lobster; it tastes out of this world.

We spent a lot of time at the pool, which was surrounded by wooden sunbeds and a poolside bar serving any drink you could think of along with snacks like freshly made chocolate crepes, which the kids loved.

As for activities, there was tennis, golf, fishing, shopping, and I even went to the local horse racing track one day - never seen so many people at a horse racing meeting! We hired a deep sea fishing boat for a day, the weather and seas were fantastic but, unfortunately, the sea seemed to be totally empty of fish that day.

We also went out in a speedboat one day dolphin spotting. The guys who charter these boats were great, they took us right up to the dolphins and we managed to follow them for a while.

All in all a holiday in Mauritius is truly fantastic, and the people are even more fantastic; they just can't do enough for you - really, really friendly. Mauritius is also very cheap: we used a taxi all day for the equivalent of about £25.
