Landfills are bad news. From uncontrolled fires created by chemical reactions that produce toxic fumes to a gigantic floating mass of trash in the Pacific Ocean, any way you look at it, landfills are ugly; they pollute the environment, kill wildlife, and compromise the health of humans for generations to come.

BeeDance, a Cleveland, Ohio-based clean technology start-up announced that its ZeroLandfill program has been honored by Contract Magazine with an Inspirations Award for socially responsible innovation in the interior design industry.

It appears that significantly reducing landfill waste isn't just possible; it wins recognition for the company that bothers to give some thought to reconceptualizing waste. BeeDance reclassifies waste into a viable asset for many people.

This dynamic company practices the philosophy that there is no such thing as waste; the current label of "waste" was created simply for convenience so that people who no longer need an item or no longer want it can simply discard it.

The company's design inspiration is the honeybee, possibly one of the most efficient and resourceful creatures in nature.

So how does the ZeroLandfill program work?

It's simply a reduce and reuse program. Interior designers and architects have lots of expired specification samples; artists and arts educators (or anyone who crafts or has a small home improvement project) have material needs for artwork, classroom and remodeling projects. So, it is a match made in heaven!

Such a program reduces pressure on local landfill capacity by carrying out an up-cycling program (the materials are not recycled, but kept intact and re-used for another purpose) that meets the supply needs of a community.

Participants show up at an event to browse through thousands of pounds of reusable material, and take what they need. Best of all, everything is free. If you bother to show up, you have earned the right to take anything useful you manage to find.
