Green Mountain College Named 'Coolest School' In America
Sierra Magazine announced the nation’s "100 Coolest Schools" with Green Mountain College (GMC) receiving the number one spot.
The liberal arts college, located in Poultney, Vt., garnered top honors for its green efforts and commitment to sustainability in the categories of energy efficiency, food, purchasing, academics, administration, transportation, waste management, and financial investments.
"GMC excels in most categories, and it's the MVP when it comes to creativity," states Sierra Magazine. "The campus gets power and heat from biomass and biogas (a.k.a. cow power) and plans to be carbon-neutral by next year."
The institution first established its environmental mission in 1995 and has committed to providing an education that promotes sustainability across all disciplines.
In recent months, GMC has received additional eco-friendly accolades; scoring 98 out of a perfect 99 in Princeton Review’s annual college green rankings, part of the company’s "The Best 373 Colleges" publication.
Rounding out the top ten of Sierra’s fourth annual "Coolest Schools" list are Dickinson College, Evergreen State College, University of Washington, Stanford University, University of California-Irvine, Northland College, Harvard University, College of the Atlantic, and Hampshire College.
To determine which schools were at the top of the class, Sierra sent out an 11-page survey to 900 colleges and universities—only 162 responded—across America asking for detailed information regarding their sustainability efforts.
