Cleveland State University has a Center for Sustainable Practices in its Nance College of Business Administration.

Specifically, it has the High Performance Building Technology (HPBT) Initiative, funded by the Cleveland Foundation, with the purpose of making HPBT mainstream. HPBT is also known as green or integrated building.

"High performance building technology refers to the whole system, or industry, of expertise, practices, processes and products required for the planning, design, development, implementation and operation of high performance buildings. Used in this context, technology has a broad connotation referring to the processes by which an organization transforms labor, capital, materials, and information into products and services of greater value. It extends beyond engineering and manufacturing to encompass a range of marketing, investment, and managerial processes."

"Therefore, high performance building design forces the re-examination of traditional products or building systems, identifying innovative technologies (or product and system alternatives) that offer significantly improved environmental performance. The use of computer energy modeling further refines a more progressive design approach supporting fairly accurate cost/benefit forecasting."

In addition to its green building initiative, Cleveland State University has a general green initiative which it promotes campus-wide by using the slogan "Go Viking Green" and by distributing 5" by 8" magnets that list 10 ways to help the environment:

1) Use a refillable water bottle and coffee cup.

2) Shop with canvas bags.

3) Buy locally.

4) U-pass, bike or walk.

5) Take 7-minute showers.

6) Keep heat and AC low.

7) Unplug electronics.

8) Buy recycled products.

9) Donate or recycle cell phones.

10) Recycle at home.

What we need is for more institutions of higher learning to create such initiatives so that more youngsters will learn and practice the many ways of improving the quality and sustainability of their lives and the lives of their loved ones.
