Alternative Community Training Recycles and Provides Jobs
With DVDs, CDs, and watching movies and videos online becoming more popular, what should we do with old, unwanted VHS tapes, floppy disks, cassettes and the like?
Alternative Community Training is a non-profit, work-training program, and social service provider rolled into one.
More than 55 employees erase and repackage donated videocassettes and floppy disks at ACT's headquarters and production floor. These are then packaged and sold to buyers at really low prices.
When you donate your unwanted videotapes and floppy disks to ACT, or when you buy the recycled goods like CD jewel cases from them, you are not only saving money but you are also providing disabled individuals with career opportunities and helping them make their own money.
ACT's videocassette and disk operations bring in about $500,000 of the agency's annual $3 million budget. It is a productive and efficient process that accomplishes a great deal more than just keeping tapes, floppies, DVDs, and CDs out of landfills because it also provides competitive wages to employees and helps them live more independent lives.
