California is known for the beaches, Hollywood, the Golden Gate bridge, the gold rush, and many other notable things, but one man, John Marcotte, is getting signatures to embark on a quest. The quest is to make divorce illegal.

The premise of the proposal comes from the vote made in 2008 banning gay marriages. The argument is “that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage.” John Marcotte has taken it a step further by saying, "voters should have no problem banning divorce.”

The Goal

In order to have the proposal voted on by the public, Marcotte must have 694,354 valid signatures by March 22. A number of marketing tools is being used, along with a little leg work to collect the signatures in California.

The Public Reaction

There are apparently some within California that are for making divorce illegal. Marcotte has obtained quiet a number of signatures and become a highlight in the political arena. The support by California’s Proposition 8, banning gay marriage in California, has been divided over this new quest.

“As much as everyone would like to see fewer divorces, making it illegal would be “impractical,” said Ron Prentice, the executive director of California Family Council.

On the other side of the spectrum, “We find it quite hilarious,” said Jeffrey Taylor, a spokesman for Restore Equality 2010.

The Disturbing News

A simple vote, as pointed out by a rally at the state Capitol in Sacramento, shows (with signs), how easy it can be to take away civil rights from someone. The rally hosted 50 individuals that realized the vote took away civil rights of an individual. How cruel to admit the suppression of civil rights for all individuals in the United States.
