Doggonit! Protect Man's Best Friend!
What is it with people and their dogs in the car? Many people ride daily with their pet near the steering wheel of the car. Sometimes dogs leap from the front to back of the car while the vehicle is moving down the street. The current law states that it is unsafe to drive and talk on a cell phone. How about driving with a dog in your lap? Driving with your dog is dangerous for the dog and the owner.
This month, in Cedar Springs, Michigan, a driver distracted by his dog struck another vehicle causing the other car to roll. Similarly, in Omaha, Nebraska a man ran a red light, hit another car and flipping his car over because his lap dog distracted him. The driver was not hurt, although his dog died in the accident.
On average,115 people die each day in motor vehicle accidents according to World Health Origination. AAA quotes that 60% of drivers admit their dogs are distracting in the car.
Currently, there are not laws on the books that protect animal safety in cars beyond those regarding pets being left in parked cars. In California, the state legislature estimates 100,000 dogs a year are killed because they jump or are thrown from a truck or pickup. Regulations call for dogs to be caged or cross-tied to the truck during transport.
Loving your pet is caring for its safety in and outside of your home. Many pet supply stores and mail order companies carry seat belts and car seats designed just for dogs.
Love is an action, and in this case it’s a seat belt for man’s best friend.
