Did They Have Sex in the 1940s?

I didn't sleep last night. My whole worldview came crashing down as a result of a single conversation. Nay. A single comment.

We eat as a family at dinner as much as possible. My son, Josh, a senior in high school, announced nine incoming freshmen girls are pregnant this year. Somehow our conversation then moved on to the old fashioned soda fountains found in pharmacies in the 1950s and 1960s.

Josh just spent three weeks in Spain this summer with our former exchange student, Jorge. Based upon our description of these soda fountains, Josh said it reminded him of places he'd seen in Spain. Then he said, "I wish the U.S. would slow down and be more like Spain in some ways."

From there we recalled the year Jorge stayed with us; he wore pajamas, slippers and a robe reminiscent of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo in I Love Lucy. Since Josh has never seen the show we talked about how Lucy and Ricky slept in twin beds separated by a night stand. My husband told our son that if American was still that way, maybe there wouldn't be nine pregnant teenagers in just one high school this year.

I don't know why, but then my husband brought up our all time favorite movie, Casablanca. He said "We only saw Rick and Ilsa kiss and then the camera panned up to a picture."

"What are you implying? Rick and Ilsa never had sex!" I insisted.

Here comes the worldview crushing comment:

"Yeah, sure, if that is what you want to believe," his voice rolled its eyes at me. (I was walking away, so I didn't actually see him.)

Okay, I'm willing to admit that in the 1950s Lucy and Ricky managed to spend one night together in a twin bed. There is no way to deny it since the birth of their baby drew more TV viewers than the Inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 19, 1953.

Please, I'm begging everyone, tell me that people didn't actually have sex in the 1940s! Restore my worldview.
