Denver Cat Lovers: Adopt For Free Until Aug 31st
Have you been thinking about adding a cat or kitten to your family? Now may be the time to do it! Denver Dumb Friends League is waiving adoption fees for all cats and kittens through the end of the month. This special ends on August 31, 2010.
The DDFL is waiving these fees due to a nearly 50% increase in cats and kittens in the shelter this year. Although their expense is nearly $300 per animal after food, shelter, and veterinary expenses, if you adopt by August 31st, your cost is $0. The fee is waived at both their Denver and Castle Rock locations.
Adoption is a lifetime committment. The average lifespan of a cat is about 16
years, so be prepared to care for this animal for that duration. If you adopt a kitten and in a few years decide to move to a place that doesn't accept pets, you are likely condemning that cat to euthanasia. Cats have outgrown the cuteness factor that attracts people to adopt kittens; therefore, their chances once they are in a shelter are much more slim.
If you have small children, please consider adopting a cat instead of a kitten. Kittens are more easily injured with the often rambunctious attention of a toddler. Kittens are also teething and tend to use toddler hands as teething rings and/or scratching posts.
According to this article, 71% of cats that enter shelters across the United States are euthanized and only 2% of cats that enter shelters are claimed by their owners. Once you adopt your cat, it is a good idea to have it microchipped to increase your likelihood of finding him should he wander. DDFL includes this as part of the adoption.
