"You Can Be Anything You Want"

Idols season has once again hit South Africa. With it, as always, comes that absurd little piece of philosophy that flows so easily off the lips of people, "You can be anything you want."

Now, I really don't have a problem with the whole issue of having confidence in expressing yourself. Let it radiate from all people, but there's a thin line between being confident on the one hand, and stupid on the other.

If ever there's a place where the, "You can be anything you want" mantra is tested and dismally found wanting, it's in Idols. I say this because for most, no matter how often they repeat it, when they finally stand before the judges and sing, a melodic void the size of the Grand Canyon fills the room and no mantra, or amount of confidence, or conviction will ever turn them in to a pop idol. It just won't happen.

And so, "You can be anything you want" - not true.

Thinking soberly about yourself - always true. It'll save you a lot of heartache.
