A new study from the University of Manitoba shows that adding just 50g, or 1.8 oz. of yellow pea flour to a diet reduced insulin levels, insulin resistance, and dangerous abdominal fat.

The study compared the use of whole yellow pea flour, flour form the hulls only and white wheat flour. Twenty-three overweight men and women who also had high cholesterol levels tried each of the different flours in muffins for 28 days.

Insulin levels and insulin resistance were lower when the pea flours were consumed, compared with white flour. Abdominal fat was lower in women when they used the whole-pea flour. The results were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

The amount of flour used is equivalent to consuming ½ cup yellow peas per day. It’s no surprise that white flour did not improve fat levels.  You can purchase dried yellow peas at the supermarket, and yellow pea flour is available at health food stores.  I don't recommend canned peas, because cans have toxic BPA.

So, the simple addition of yellow peas to a diet can make a huge difference in the amount of belly fat. This is the unhealthiest place to have fat, and because the yellow peas also reduced insulin levels, they can be a very important ally in your fat-loss goals.
