The Thing About Fashion Week...
The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York is upon us, showcasing the latest fashions for Spring 2011. And I thought it was still Summer, even as I attempt to blow away Fall-like weather in the Northwest. At any rate, September is here, and so are the fashion shows.
The hubbub over fashion week is exciting:cameras flashing, models walking with swinging appendages, platform heels clicking down the runway. Although I do confess, I'm much more comfortable partaking in the fashion buzz in my fuzzy wool socks and pajamas, while eating lemon tart.
Because while the whole affair seems exciting, it's also intimidating and I would feel extremely out of place if I could ever get in with my faded jeans and t-shirt. Who can afford those clothes anyway, save a few?
The thing about fashion week is that while we lust over jewels dripping down the plunging necklines of models, and imagine ourselves in sweeping, flamboyant gowns the color of candy, this kind of fashion is not realistic for most of us (I'm wearing fuzzy socks, remember). Sunglasses for $1000 and a scarf for $2650 are only accessories to a whole ensemble. We'd have to sell our house just to pay for one outfit.
In addition to being expensive, many of the clothes are impractical. I mean really, where are the clothes for cooking dinner and folding laundry?
So while fashion week gives us a peek at how those few are living, and humbles us to the current state of our financial affairs while illiciting feelings of envy, we can begin to reframe our thoughts. Afterall, they're only clothes. Maybe this whole fashion week experience will help us find our own inner designer.
Go ahead. I'll bet you've got some old curtains laying around and maybe even some ribbon, denim, buttons, safety pins and glue. It's an idea anyway, at least until we wait for Target to come out with more practical versions from the runway for us.
