The Mean Women of Society

Relational Aggression is a raging problem in our society today. However, do these mean girls grow up? One has to wonder if they grow up or grow worse. My money is on the latter.

There is a group based in Los Angeles called SMARTY, women that come together and make a conscious effort to avoid getting involved with clique and catty behavior that we see in girls. Do you want my opinion? I think women who even resort to this level of behavior are sad, yet pathetic at the same time.

It is sad because they have learned and fallen into these social roles. It is pathetic because, as adults, they should know better. I think it is awesome that SMARTY has come together as women should: encouraging one another, not bringing each other down.

According to Dr. Sharon Lamb, Ed.D, one of the problems with this behavior is that “some parents show greater acceptance of anger in boys and fear in girls, and girls show more fear while boys show more anger” which is explained in her book The Secret Lives of Girls.

If women showing anger is unacceptable, it is fair to say that they repress it and use it in more covert and manipulative ways. Girls do not have the social skills that women have, so they tend to resort to these covert ways in dealing with their feelings.

By the time they are women, they are not aware of how they have cultivated their behavior and added to the dysfunctional problems we face today. At the same time, as adults, we have the resources, experience and skills to break these aggressive cycles. It is nothing more than abuse of one another and it can be stopped with effort and awareness. Our behavior affects children and setting an example is the first place to start.
